With insights from Royal Pool & Spa, you'll learn how pool depth affects safety, enjoyment, and maintenance, ensuring your pool is a perfect fit for your family and lifestyle.

]]>
Deciding on the perfect depth for your swimming pool is more than just a matter of preference; it's about tailoring your backyard oasis to fit your lifestyle, activities, and safety requirements. Whether you envision your pool as a serene haven for relaxation, a vibrant space for family fun, or a rigorous area for exercise, understanding how to choose the right pool depth is crucial. The process involves considering the various activities you plan to enjoy, from leisurely swims to diving, and ensuring the safety of all swimmers, especially children.

Imagine a pool that not only complements your home’s aesthetics but also caters to the needs of every family member. For those dreaming of lazy summer days floating in calm waters, a shallow end is essential, while thrill-seekers might long for a deeper section that allows for diving. Balancing these desires with practical considerations such as safety, maintenance, and budget can seem daunting. Yet, with the right knowledge and approach, selecting the ideal pool depth can be an exciting part of your pool design journey, ensuring years of enjoyment and satisfaction.

Throughout this discussion, we will delve into the factors influencing pool depth choice, including safety guidelines, the intended use of the pool, and the needs of all potential users. By considering these elements, you can create a pool that not only meets your aesthetic and recreational needs but also ensures a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. Let's explore how to make informed decisions about pool depth that will enhance your swimming experience and maximize the benefits of your pool.

Considering a Diving Board for Your Pool

When contemplating the addition of a diving board to your pool, several critical factors come into play, influencing both the design and depth of your pool. A diving board is not just an accessory; it's a commitment to a certain type of pool experience that prioritizes excitement and active use. The decision hinges on understanding the implications for pool depth, safety regulations, and the overall functionality of your pool area.

Safety is paramount. Pools equipped with diving boards require significantly deeper water to ensure safe diving conditions. According to industry standards, a pool must have a minimum depth of about 8 feet to safely accommodate a diving board. This requirement is in place to prevent accidents and injuries, making the depth a non-negotiable aspect for those wishing to include a diving board. Beyond depth, the pool's design must also incorporate a gradually increasing slope to meet the deep end, ensuring divers do not come into contact with the pool's bottom.

The presence of a diving board influences the pool's overall design and usage. It becomes a focal point for active recreation, appealing to those who enjoy the thrill of diving. However, this feature might limit the pool's versatility for other activities, such as water games or lap swimming, if not planned correctly. Additionally, installing a diving board requires adherence to strict safety standards and local regulations, which might involve additional expenses for proper installation and insurance coverage.

It's essential to weigh the excitement and dynamic use a diving board offers against the practical considerations of safety, maintenance, and cost. For families with avid swimmers or those seeking to add an exhilarating feature to their pool, a diving board could be a fantastic addition. Yet, it demands careful planning and consultation with pool design professionals to ensure it aligns with your lifestyle, safety standards, and the architectural integrity of your pool. In considering a diving board, one must evaluate the balance between the desire for an active pool feature and the necessary precautions and design alterations it entails.

Evaluating the Addition of a Water Slide to Your Pool

Integrating a water slide into your pool design can transform your swimming pool into an exhilarating entertainment hub, making it a magnet for family and friends seeking fun and adventure. However, the decision to add a water slide involves careful consideration of factors such as space, safety, and cost, ensuring it aligns with your overall pool experience vision.

Safety and space requirements are paramount when considering a water slide. Adequate space is essential not only for the slide itself but also for safe landing areas in the pool. The pool depth near the slide's exit must be appropriate to prevent injuries, typically ranging from 3.5 to 4.5 feet, depending on the slide's design and height. Furthermore, ensuring the slide is constructed from durable materials and adheres to safety standards is crucial to avoid accidents and enhance longevity. The area around the pool should also be considered, as a water slide requires additional space and may impact the overall landscape and pool area aesthetics.

Moreover, the cost of adding a water slide extends beyond the initial purchase and installation. Maintenance expenses, water use, and potential increases in insurance premiums due to the perceived risk of having a slide should be factored into the decision-making process. Despite these considerations, a water slide offers unparalleled excitement and aesthetic appeal, making it a worthy investment for those looking to create a standout recreational space. It encourages active play and can be a unique feature that sets your pool apart, offering endless hours of enjoyment for both children and adults.

Ultimately, adding a water slide to your pool is a significant decision that should be approached with a comprehensive understanding of the benefits and considerations involved. It requires careful planning and professional advice to ensure it complements your pool's design, meets safety regulations, and fits within your budget. For those seeking to enhance their pool's fun factor and create lasting memories, a water slide can be an excellent addition, provided it aligns with your lifestyle and pool usage preferences.

Pool Renovation

Designing Your Pool for Games, Water Jogging, and Aerobics

When envisioning a swimming pool that accommodates pool games, water jogging, and aerobics, the depth and design of your pool become crucial elements to consider. These activities require specific pool features and depths to ensure they are enjoyable, safe, and practical for all ages and abilities. Designing a pool that supports these activities can transform it into a versatile aquatic center, offering endless fun and fitness opportunities.

For pool games, a varied depth pool, with both shallow and somewhat deeper areas, allows for a wide range of activities. Shallow areas are perfect for younger swimmers and games, while slightly deeper sections, typically around 4 to 5 feet, are ideal for adults participating in more vigorous games or exercises. This depth is safe for most swimmers and provides enough water resistance for effective water jogging and aerobics without compromising safety. Additionally, for water aerobics and jogging, which require standing with head above water, a uniform depth of about 4 feet is often recommended to accommodate various heights comfortably.

Incorporating features such as swim lanes can enhance the functionality of your pool for water jogging, while spacious, unobstructed areas allow for group aerobics sessions. The design should also consider easy access, like steps or a zero-entry point, to make the pool accessible for participants of all ages and fitness levels. Non-slip surfaces around the pool and within are also important for safety, especially when engaging in activities that involve a lot of movement and can be prone to slips and falls.

Integrating a Play Area for Small Children in Your Pool Design

Creating a dedicated play area for small children in your pool design is essential for families looking to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for the youngest swimmers. Such an area not only enhances the safety of your pool but also encourages children to enjoy water play under supervision. When planning a child-friendly zone, several design considerations must be taken into account to cater to their needs and safety.

A shallow play area, often referred to as a splash pad or wading area, should have a depth of no more than 18 inches to allow toddlers and small children to stand and play comfortably in the water. This shallow depth ensures that children can enjoy the water without the risk of going into deeper sections accidentally. Additionally, incorporating non-slip surfaces and soft, rounded edges can greatly reduce the risk of slips and injuries. For added engagement, features such as water jets, gentle fountains, and interactive water toys can be integrated into this area, providing endless entertainment and stimulating play.

Moreover, the location of the play area within the pool's overall design is crucial. It should be easily visible from the main seating or lounging areas, allowing parents and guardians to keep a close eye on the children at all times. Also, consider the use of natural shade or installing umbrellas or pergolas to protect sensitive skin from the sun. The design of this area should seamlessly blend with the rest of the pool, ensuring that it is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, adding to the overall appeal of your backyard oasis. By incorporating a play area designed specifically for small children, your pool becomes a versatile, family-friendly environment that's a safe, engaging space for the youngest family members to enjoy the water.

<![CDATA[The Best Time of Year for Swimming Pool Renovations]]>https://royalpoolandspa.com/Blog/entryid/108/the-best-time-of-year-for-swimming-pool-renovationsKnow about the ideal seasons for swimming pool renovations and how choosing the right timing can significantly impact the success of your project. We discuss the benefits of renovating in spring, summer, and fall, and how Royal Pool & Spa can help you achieve your dream pool makeover.

]]>

Deciding when to renovate your swimming pool is as crucial as the renovation process itself. As the seasons change, so do the opportunities and challenges associated with pool renovations. The right timing can make the difference between a smooth, efficient project and one that faces delays and complications. This article will explore the best times of year for swimming pool renovations, providing insights that align with both climatic considerations and practical planning.

READ: When Is the Best Time to Install a Pool?

Renovating your swimming pool is not just about addressing wear and tear; it's about transforming your backyard into a personal oasis. The timing of these renovations can impact the project's success, affecting everything from the availability of contractors to the weather conditions that dictate the pace of work. By choosing the optimal season for your renovations, you can ensure a seamless integration of new features, technologies, and designs, making your pool ready for enjoyment at just the right time.

Why is Spring Considered the Ideal Time for Pool Renovations?

Spring emerges as the prime season for swimming pool renovations for several compelling reasons. The mild weather and moderate temperatures create an optimal environment for construction activities, ensuring materials are set properly, and work progresses without the delays often caused by summer's extreme heat or winter's harsh conditions. This season strikes a perfect balance, offering conducive conditions for a wide range of renovation tasks, from simple cosmetic updates to extensive structural overhauls.

Beyond the agreeable weather, spring renovations benefit from strategic timing. Completing renovations during this season allows pool owners to address any issues that have arisen over the winter, ensuring their pool is in peak condition for the upcoming summer. This foresight prevents the disappointment of pool closures during the hottest months, a crucial consideration for those eager to maximize their pool's usage. Furthermore, spring renovations can take advantage of off-peak contractor schedules, potentially leading to more favorable pricing and availability.

Another aspect to consider is the landscaping and ecosystem around the pool. Spring provides a unique opportunity for integrating pool renovations with landscaping projects, as plants and lawns are beginning their growth cycles. This synchronization allows for a seamless aesthetic transition between the pool area and its surrounding landscape, enhancing the overall beauty and functionality of outdoor spaces. The timing also supports the natural recovery and regrowth of vegetation disturbed during the renovation process, ensuring a lush, inviting poolside environment as summer approaches.

How Can Summer Pool Renovations Enhance Your Outdoor Entertainment?

Summer pool renovations offer a unique opportunity to elevate your outdoor entertainment experience. During the warmest months, a pool becomes the centerpiece of leisure and social gatherings. Upgrading your pool in the summer can introduce new features that enhance both its functionality and aesthetic appeal, such as installing modern lighting systems for night-time swims or adding water features that create a more dynamic and engaging environment. These improvements not only enhance the swimming experience but also increase the overall ambiance of your outdoor space.

Renovating in the summer allows homeowners to immediately enjoy the benefits of their updated facilities. With the pool area being a popular spot for summer parties, barbecues, and relaxation, adding amenities like an outdoor kitchen, a poolside bar, or comfortable lounging areas can transform your backyard into a luxury resort. These enhancements encourage outdoor living and provide a perfect setting for hosting memorable gatherings with family and friends, making every occasion feel like a special event.

Furthermore, incorporating energy-efficient solutions and advanced filtration systems during summer renovations can lead to long-term savings and improved pool health. Upgrades like solar heating panels or saltwater chlorination systems not only contribute to a more eco-friendly pool environment but also ensure better water quality. This combination of immediate enjoyment and long-term benefits underscores the value of summer pool renovations in creating an ultimate outdoor entertainment oasis.

What Makes Fall the Smart Choice for Pool Makeovers?

Fall presents itself as a strategic period for undertaking pool renovations for a variety of reasons. The demand for swimming pool contractors typically declines after the summer rush, leading to better availability and potentially more negotiable rates. This off-peak scheduling can result in more attentive service and faster project completion times, as contractors have fewer concurrent projects.

Cooler temperatures and stable weather conditions during fall reduce the likelihood of delays caused by weather-related interruptions. This ensures that renovation projects can proceed on schedule, allowing for more efficient planning and execution. Additionally, the mild weather is ideal for certain types of construction materials to cure and settle properly, ensuring the longevity and durability of the renovation work.

Moreover, completing pool renovations in the fall means that your pool will be ready to go by the time summer rolls around again. This foresight eliminates the inconvenience of pool downtime during the peak season. It also provides an opportunity to address any discovered issues well before the pool is needed, ensuring a stress-free kickoff to the summer season. Thus, fall renovations align well with the goal of seamless entertainment and enjoyment, maximizing the utility and appeal of your pool area without interruption.

Choosing the Right Contractor for Your Seasonal Pool Renovation

Selecting the appropriate contractor is pivotal to ensuring the success of your pool renovation project, regardless of the season. The right contractor not only brings expertise and experience but also understands the nuances of timing and material selection that align with your renovation goals. It's essential to look for contractors with a robust portfolio of completed projects, demonstrating their ability to deliver high-quality work across a variety of pool styles and renovation complexities.

When choosing a contractor, consider their communication and project management skills. Effective communication ensures that your vision for the pool renovation is understood and accurately brought to life. Additionally, a contractor who offers transparent project management, including detailed timelines and budget breakdowns, can significantly reduce the stress of undergoing a renovation. This transparency fosters trust and ensures that the project stays on track and within budget.

Lastly, the importance of verifying the contractor's credentials cannot be overstated. This includes checking for proper licensing, insurance, and any relevant certifications that demonstrate their commitment to quality and safety. Client testimonials and reviews can also provide insight into the contractor's reliability and the satisfaction level of previous customers. A well-chosen contractor will not only deliver a successful renovation but also enhance the overall value and enjoyment of your pool for years to come.

<![CDATA[Pool Acid Washing Explained ]]>https://royalpoolandspa.com/Blog/entryid/15/pool-acid-washing-explainedIs your pool looking a bit dingy? Maybe you're dealing with stubborn green, yellow, or black spots or streaks that have grown over time. These issues typically develop in pools that aren't properly maintained, and when they show up, they can be tough, if not virtually impossible, to get rid of.

No matter how hard you scrub or which chemical cleaning products you use, the staining and dingy discoloration might refuse to budge. So what was once a crystal clear, inviting pool now looks dirty, dingy, and distasteful. Fortunately, you can get rid of those stains and restore your pool's appeal with a professional service called acid washing

What exactly is acid washing, and when should you have it done? Let's take a look.

What Is Pool Acid Washing?

Acid washing uses heavy-duty acids (usually muriatic and/or hydrochloric) to restore your swimming pool's visual appeal. Once applied, the acids effectively strip away a thin layer of plaster from the surface of the pool's walls, which doesn't harm the pool in any way.

Any stains or discoloration is ingrained in that layer of plaster, so when the plaster comes off, the discoloration disappears with it.

How Does Acid Washing Clean Dingy Pools?

When a pool renovation specialist comes out to acid wash your swimming pool, they'll start by draining the pool completely. When the water is gone, they'll saturate one pool wall with water and then spray segments of that wall with acid.

Depending on your pool's staining, the spray may contain a blend of acid and other chemicals to help eliminate the discoloration. After applying acid to a segment, the technician will scrub the area vigorously with a special acid brush for 30-90 seconds before thoroughly rinsing the area with water. This process will be repeated until the entire pool interior is clean.

When Is Pool Acid Washing Needed?

Pool acid washing generally becomes necessary when a swimming pool has not been properly maintained or cleaned for some time. It may not be necessary at all for pools that are cleaned weekly and otherwise well-maintained.

Because acid washing removes a thin layer of plaster from your pool, it should not be done frequently. We do not recommend acid washing your pool annually, as too many treatments may necessitate re-plastering.

To help avoid the need for such abrasive pool cleaning, it's best to perform regular pool maintenance or hire a service to do it for you. Remember: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You certainly want to protect and enjoy your investment, and regular cleaning will help you do that.

If you're dealing with the following issues, scheduling the service is probably a good idea!

Scale Buildup Caused by Hard Water

Hard water is high in several minerals that can accumulate on the walls of your pool over time, causing unsightly scale deposits and cloudy water. But these deposits do more than make your pool look bad.

The minerals they contain can affect the pH of your pool water, pushing it outside the optimal range. When that happens, the surface of your pool and various pieces of equipment can suffer damage if you don't address the issue promptly; acid washing will take care of the problem!

Algae Growth & Staining

Algae typically grow in pools that aren't cleaned often or thoroughly enough and those with long-term water chemical imbalances. Depending on the type, growths can be greenish-brown, yellowish, black, or even pinkish.

When these growths are promptly addressed, they may not cause staining at all. But if they're allowed to sit, getting off without heavy-duty measures like professional acid washing can be almost impossible.

Check out What's Causing the Algae Growth in Your Pool? for more information.

Iron, Copper & Magnesium Stains

If you fill your swimming pool with well water, it probably contains iron and/or copper. And if the levels are high, your pool walls may develop brown, red, blue, green, or black stains over time.

If your pool has this type of staining and you've tried to remove it without success, acid washing can quickly fix the issue. But once you have it done, you may want to consider filling your pool with water from a different source that isn't so high in iron.

As a rule of thumb, if you can see the bottom of your pool in the shallow end, you’ll likely be able to fix the appearance with regular cleaning, chemicals, and filtering. When you can no longer see the floor of your pool, throwing more chemicals in the water probably won’t help. In fact, you may end up spending more on the combined cost of chemicals and labor than you would on an acid wash service.

Got a few minor pool stains you're worried about? Learn how to identify, remove, and prevent pool stains to keep your backyard oasis looking great.

How Does Acid Washing Improve My Pool?

An acid wash is designed to strip away the outermost layer of your pool’s walls and, with that layer, any phosphate or algae buildup. Over time, even with regular maintenance, your pool can develop persistent algae that no longer responds to regular chemical treatment.

When this occurs, an acid wash is often the only procedure that can restore your pool to a healthy state. After we perform this service, you’ll notice a striking improvement in your pool’s aesthetic, along with greater ease in maintaining clear, appealing water.

Can a Homeowner Acid Wash a Pool Themselves?

Although you can attempt DIY acid washing (supplies are widely available at retail pool stores), that doesn't mean you should

Why not?

Because acid-washing chemicals are strong, they can be downright dangerous if you don't know how to use them properly or wear proper protective equipment. When inhaled, these heavy-duty acids can cause breathing problems, and if they make contact with your skin, they can leave behind painful burns.

Aside from its potential health hazards, DIY acid washing isn't a great idea because you could damage your pool. If you don't mix the chemicals properly or thoroughly rinse an area after scrubbing, the acid will continue eating away at your pool.

Hiring a pro for the job is the safest way to go, especially when you choose our team at Royal Pool & Spa. Each team member has at least a decade of experience in the pool industry and can ensure your pool is properly handled

Here's how we do it.

Draining

We use a pump to remove all of the water from the pool. We also remove any debris before beginning the wash process.

Mixing & Spraying

Next, we mix hydrochloric acid and various chemicals. We then spray an even layer of the acid solution on the surface of your pool's walls and floor.

Scrubbing

Using the appropriate equipment and safety gear, we scrub the walls of your pool with the acid mixture still in place.

Rinsing

After we remove all buildup, we thoroughly rinse your pool to remove the acid. We may have to repeat this process several times to remove residual chemicals.

<![CDATA[How to Deal With Snow on Your Winter Pool Cover]]>https://royalpoolandspa.com/Blog/entryid/90/how-to-deal-with-snow-on-your-winter-pool-coverIf you own a pool in the Twin Cities area, you probably installed some type of winter cover during your swimming pool closing process. While that cover is designed to protect your pool and the safety of your household members, winter weather could end up damaging it and compromising its functionality if you're not careful.

How do you prevent that from happening? Read on to learn when and how to deal with snow accumulation on your pool cover.

How Much Snow Is Too Much?

As long as less than two feet of snow is on your winter pool cover, you shouldn't worry about removing the buildup. A heavy-duty winter pool cover is designed to accommodate that kind of weight, provided the water level in your pool does not decrease.

If your pool's water level does drop, even by a couple of inches, there won't be adequate support for the cover, and without that support, it can tear or fall into the pool. With no support from the water, cover springs and safety cover straps can also fail under the weight of accumulated snow.

To ensure your pool cover has adequate support throughout the winter season, monitor your pool's water level frequently. It should remain three to six inches below the level of the skimmer opening. If the water drops below that level, you'll need to add more water to prevent damage to the cover.

How to Handle a Cover That's Frozen to the Water's Surface

If you have a mesh cover, don't be alarmed if it looks as though it might break under the weight of a bit of snow buildup. And if your cover looks frozen to the water's surface, that's fairly normal, too. When the snow/ice begins to melt, that water will travel through the mesh cover and back into your pool, pushing the cover back up into its normal position.

Whatever you do, don't try to break the cover free with a shovel or accelerate the thawing of the snow or ice on top of the mesh. Intervening could damage the cover and render it useless, so it's in your best interest to let nature take its course.

How to Remove Excessive Snow From Your Pool Cover

Whether you have a mesh pool cover or a solid, automatic pool cover, you shouldn't allow more than two feet of snow/ice to accumulate on its surface, or it may incur damage. So, how do you get rid of that snow buildup? Here are a few different ways you can safely remove snow and ice from the surface of your pool cover:

If Your Cover has Between Two and Three Feet of Buildup

Worry about removing snow accumulation around the edges of your pool first. Removing that accumulation will facilitate efficient water drainage into the pool when the buildup on top of the cover melts. If you want, you can use a broom to remove a small amount of the buildup around the edges of the cover, too.

More than Three Feet of Snow Buildup

Use a push broom with soft bristles to gently pull snow off the top of the cover. You can also try using a plastic snow shovel if the snow is very dense or hardened, as a broom may not get the job done efficiently.

Apply Pool Salt on Top of the Snow

Pool salt will accelerate the melting process. If you have a solid cover, you'll need a cover pump for this method to work, as the pump will need to remove the water once the salt has melted some of the snow accumulation.

Use a Leaf Blower

A leaf blower can be the perfect solution if a push broom is too challenging. While it's not ideal for heavy compact snow, if you're only dealing with a light coating, the blower can easily get the job done. Clear the pool's edges, then use the blower to remove what is left in the middle unless it's too dense and heavy.

Apply a Waterproof Heat Cable

If we get a notoriously strong Minnesota snowfall and a couple of feet have dumped onto the cover, one way to speed up the melting process is using a heated cable.

The biggest thing you want to be aware of is using a low-powered one, and don't turn the heat on too high because this can result in a burn or hole in your cover. Use a low and consistent temperature that will gradually melt the snow, and you can use a submersible pump to remove any excess water buildup.

In addition to removing snow from your pool cover, you'll want to monitor snow and ice as they begin to melt on warmer days. If you have a solid cover, any snow/ice that melts during the day will easily re-freeze during the night, and as it freezes, it can tear your cover, especially if it's old.

Whenever you notice snowmelt puddling, turn your cover pump on as soon as possible to get the water off the cover's surface before it has a chance to re-freeze.

<![CDATA[8 Signs Your Swimming Pool Needs Renovations]]>https://royalpoolandspa.com/Blog/entryid/76/8-signs-your-swimming-pool-needs-renovationsSummer is almost here in the Twin Cities, which means pool season is right around the corner! But if your pool isn't in the greatest shape, whether because it's old or you've neglected routine pool maintenance, chances are you won't enjoy it as much as you could.

There comes a time in every pool's life when renovations and updates become necessary. If your pool is exhibiting any of the following issues, it's time to start seriously thinking about hiring the pros for a few swimming pool renovations.

Visible Plaster Damage

If you have a plaster pool and the walls are visibly damaged or deteriorated, it's well past time to schedule swimming pool renovations. Cracks in the pool's surface can lead to serious leaks, a major problem you don't want to deal with.

Other forms of damage, like staining and deterioration, can usually be solved with acid washing, which is recommended at five- to seven-year intervals.

Damage to the Pool Liner

No pool liner lasts forever. If yours is showing obvious signs of damage or deterioration, it's time to start thinking about scheduling a swimming pool liner replacement with a pro.

Here are the red flags you'll want to keep an eye out for:

 • Serious color fading

 • Recurring wrinkles, which may indicate you have the wrong size liner

 • Staining or discoloration that won't go away

 • Off-track liner beads

Damage to the Pool Deck

Damaged pool decking is a safety hazard no pool owner should ever ignore. Cracked decking, damaged coping, warping, and erosion can also present a safety risk to anyone who uses your pool, especially children who may not realize hazards are present.

To maintain optimal safety, have a pool repair professional look at your decking to determine the best course of action for fixing the existing issues. It's also in your best interest to get to the root of whatever caused the damage in the first place and address that issue, too.

Increasing Operational Expenses

Does it seem like your pool is getting increasingly more expensive to operate and maintain? If your electric bills are growing and your pool seems to be the culprit, that's a good sign that its operational equipment is becoming less efficient.

Replacing the affected components – inefficient pool pumps and filters are two common electricity hogs – can help lower your energy bills and ensure long-term pool performance.

Frequent Need for Repairs

If your pool equipment seems to break down regularly, it may be time to start thinking about a few pool renovations. Pool equipment naturally experiences a drop-off in efficiency as it ages, and eventually, it becomes more vulnerable to serious problems that can cause breakdowns.

While calling for pool repair services may not be inconvenient, repair costs can add up over time. Depending on the frequency with which you need repairs, replacing your existing pool equipment may be more cost-effective.

A few updates every pool owner should eventually consider for their aging pool include:

The Pump Is on the Fritz

You need a strong pump to circulate the water in your pool so it stays clean and clear. Suppose you're noticing that it's not functioning like normal or it's making strange noises like grinding or screeching. In that case, it's tripping your circuit breaker and overloading the circuits, or if it's over 11 to 15 years old, it's recommended to consider a replacement.

Your Automatic Pool Cover is Looking Worse for Wear

Automatic pool covers are a fantastic investment because they keep your pool cleaner, decrease the amount of wear and tear on the system, and save you the time and effort to open and close the cover yourself.

Over time, the fabric will start to wear down, so if you are experiencing issues like fraying or discoloration, the fabric is turning stiff or brittle, or you're starting to see leaks, tears, and holes, it may be time to call an expert for an assessment.

The Pool Plumbing is Leaking

It's no secret that upkeep on pools can be costly, and if it starts to leak, this can affect every area of your life, from your property to your pocketbook. If you have to keep adding excess water to keep it level, you have ground around the pool that's constantly soggy. Or, if you're seeing cracks in your pool deck, these are also indicators you have a plumbing leak, and without repair, it will just continue to damage your property and your bank account.

<![CDATA[6 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Pool Filter Cartridge]]>https://royalpoolandspa.com/Blog/entryid/66/6-signs-its-time-to-replace-your-pool-filter-cartridgePool filter cartridges don’t last forever, and when they begin to fail, there are a few telltale signs that alert you to the need for replacement.

If you have a pool maintenance schedule, your technician will know when to replace the filter cartridge. But if you’re the DIY maintenance type, recognizing the signs of a deteriorating cartridge might not be your forte.

To help you maintain your pool appropriately, the pool maintenance experts at Royal Pool & Spa explain six common signs of a failing pool filter below.

1. Cracked Cartridge End Caps

The chemicals that balance your pool’s water chemistry can deteriorate plastic cartridge endcaps over time. If the endcaps crack, they can no longer maintain the cartridge’s tight, compact form, negatively affecting filter performance.

Worse, if a piece of the broken material shears off and travels through the filter system, it can cause further equipment damage. To protect your pool and avoid an unnecessary repair expense, replace the cartridge as soon as you notice a chipped or cracked endcap.

2. High PSI

If your pool pressure gauge registers a PSI spike, that may indicate a problem with the filter cartridge. When the cartridge is excessively dirty, it strains the filter, which causes the PSI to rise.

If dirt and debris are causing the issue, a quick cartridge cleaning should resolve it. But if that doesn’t work, you should contact a pool filter repair specialist who can inspect the component and advise whether filter replacement is necessary.

3. Flattened Filter Pleats

When the polyester material that forms the cartridge becomes oversaturated with dirt or debris, the pleats will begin to deform, a process known as flattening. Flattened pleats can significantly restrict water flow, limiting the filter’s cleaning capacity.

If the cartridge has a missing or broken band, that can also result in flattening. You can replace the damaged cartridge if you’re well-versed in filter replacement. Otherwise, contact a professional to perform the job.

4. Cartridge Collapse

If the inner core of your filter cartridge collapses, the filter may look like it’s been crushed. The inner plastic core reinforces the cartridge pleats, preventing them from collapsing, but if it breaks, there’s no support for the pleats.

If you notice a crumpled filter, it could be due to improper cartridge size, sub-standard manufacturing, or a long-standing crack that finally gave way. In any case, you should contact a pool filter repair specialist for advice on your best course of action.

5. Consistently High Pressure

When the pressure gauge on your pool filter is chronically elevated, that’s a solid sign that it’s time for a new filter. High pressure indicates the existing filter is working harder than it should, which may be because it’s clogged or because its functional life has expired.

If you’re unsure whether you need a cleaning or pool filter replacement, contact a pro who can assess the existing filter and advise you on your options.

6. Increased Need for Chemicals

When you need to add more chemicals to the water to keep it clean and balance the pH, that’s a good sign that the filter is no longer working as it should and must be replaced. That said, other issues can cause your pool to need more chemicals, including algae growth, high evaporation rate, and more.

If your filter looks fine and you’re still adding more chemicals to the water than usual, contact a pro for help. An experienced pool maintenance specialist can test the water, assess the situation, and formulate an action plan for getting your pool back on track.

<![CDATA[What to Know About Winterizing a Saltwater Pool]]>https://royalpoolandspa.com/Blog/entryid/100/what-to-know-about-winterizing-a-saltwater-pool
If you want to prevent algae growth, plumbing damage, and surface stains throughout the winter, here's what you should know about winterizing your saltwater pool.]]>
Are you the proud owner of a new saltwater pool? If so, it's in your best interest to have at least a basic understanding of how to perform the swimming pool closing process, even if you plan on hiring a professional to handle the job.

If you want to prevent algae growth, plumbing damage, and surface stains throughout the winter, here's what you should know about winterizing your saltwater pool.

When Should You Winterize a Saltwater Pool?

Even in areas where temperatures never get to freezing, your saltwater pool needs to be on a schedule for winterization. Generally, most residential pool owners will shut down their pools around the end of September, and while a pool heater can extend this time, you don't want to push it too far once the temperatures begin to drop.

Because of the chemical makeup of the salt, once it gets below 50 degrees, it can cause salt cell damage and require extra maintenance. Start winterizing your saltwater pool between the 50 and 60-degree mark, which typically happens in Minnesota around the end of September or the beginning of October.

Don't Overdo It With the Salt

You might be tempted to dump a bunch of salt in your pool to ensure the water stays clean throughout winter, but if you do that, you could end up with unsightly stains come spring.

It's always best to maintain salt levels within the manufacturer's recommended range, regardless of the time of year. It might seem counterintuitive, but it's better to keep salt levels toward the low end of that range when winter rolls around.

To make sure the salt level isn't too high, avoid adding extra salt to your pool for about two weeks before you plan to shut it down.

Test & Balance Water pH

Make sure you properly balance the water chemistry before adding winter chemicals to the water. If your pool's pH, calcium levels, and total alkalinity aren't within the proper ranges when you shut it down, you may find salt-related mineral scales on the surfaces of your pool come spring.

Thoroughly Clean the Pool

Make sure you get your pool as clean as it can get before you start the winterization process. Thoroughly cleaning it before winter will help prevent algae and bacteria from proliferating in the stagnant water, ease the pool opening process come spring, and ensure it keeps all the great benefits you love.

Remove & Store Pool Equipment

Any pool equipment that can be removed should be taken out of your pool, thoroughly cleaned, and stored for the winter. This included ladders, diving boards, handrails, slides, etc. Do this so that these pieces of equipment won't interfere with your winter pool cover placement, which you'll apply as the final step in the swimming pool closing process.

Add Winter Pool Chemicals

If you're unfamiliar with which chemicals to add and which ratios to use, it's in your best interest to buy a swimming pool closing kit designed for your saltwater pool. But if you're uncomfortable handling this job yourself, hire a pro to ensure it's done properly.

Drain Some Water

If you have an above-ground pool, you'll want to drain it until the water level is about six inches below the skimmer. If you have an in-ground pool, drain it until the water is level roughly 12 inches below the skimmer.

But if you have a vinyl pool, this step may be optional, depending on your pool and its equipment. A swimming pool closing specialist can tell you whether lowering the water level is necessary and how much you should drain.

Remove & Clean the Salt Generator

Remove the salt cell, inspect its interior for scaly deposits, and use a high-pressure hose to clean it out well. If you prefer, you can use a plastic or wood scraper to remove those deposits instead. Whatever you do, DO NOT use a metal tool to scrape away scaly buildup on the unit's generator plates, and don't use excessive force, either. You could end up damaging your equipment if you do.

Blow Out the Lines

Of all the steps involved in the saltwater swimming pool closing process, this one is probably the most important. If you don't do it properly, water can freeze inside your pool's plumbing system, crack the pipes, damage your decking, and, ultimately, leave you with expensive pool damage.

If you're unsure how to do this properly, hiring a pro who can thoroughly winterize your pool's plumbing lines and skimmer is in your best interest.

Put a Cover On It

Last but certainly not least, cover your pool! You need to do this to not only keep debris out of the water but also an excessive amount of precipitation that can throw off the pH balance of the water.

<![CDATA[New Trends in Pool Renovation ]]>https://royalpoolandspa.com/Blog/entryid/46/new-trends-in-pool-renovationNothing beats relaxing in a cool, refreshing pool with family and friends. Pools should be a source of enjoyment, with endless summer entertainment. If you look at your pool and only see mounting maintenance issues and an outdated look, it might be time for a renovation.

There are several effective and low-cost renovation ideas that can give your pool a more modern look without breaking the bank. Below, let's look at some of the most popular trends in pool renovation.

New Tile

Sometimes, simply replacing a chipped or broken tile is all that is needed to make a pool look new again. If you want a larger renovation and a fresh look for your pool, consider replacing the tile surrounding the pool and the coping.

The hottest trend right now is to use tiny mosaic tiles. These small tiles are often made of recycled glass or ceramic. Beautiful and relatively maintenance-free, these small tiles are easy to clean and make a pool shine.

Fresh Paint

Blue color shades will always be popular with swimming pools. Blue is a timeless style choice that mimics the cool, refreshing colors of the ocean.

Recently, though, the trend has been to experiment with other bold color choices to paint your pool. Seafoam greens that mirror the Caribbean waters or charcoal grays that match the black sand beaches of Hawaii are also popular.

Light beige and gray colors are trending now because they mimic the color of sand and can help hide dirt and debris that gather on the bottom of the pool. Our experts are happy to discuss several color choices to find just the right color to repaint your pool.

A Deep Cleaning

In some cases, all your pool needs is a fresh start. Using an acid-wash cleaning process is the perfect way to remove accumulated dirt and grime. If your pool water starts to look murky and dark, it might be time for an acid wash.

Simply winterizing your pool can create dirt and debris that must be removed. The acid wash process is extremely effective at removing stains on the bottom of your pool, which may have formed from dead leaves left to sit through the winter.

If you have a commercial pool, we can work with your schedule to make the least amount of guest and resident impact possible. An acid wash is a great way to give your pool a fresh new look with your existing features.

New Liners

Your pool liner has multiple purposes, including creating insulation for more efficiency, adding protection to reduce potential repairs, and creating an amazing aesthetic you love. Upgrading ensures that your pool stays protected, and because it comes in various patterns, textures, and colors, it lets you add some personalization to help complement your space.

Automated Systems

Caring for your pool can take a lot of work, and adding automation is a great renovation to consider installing. Adding a cover that automatically closes or a system that completes tasks like sanitization, pH balancing, and infiltration can free up your time and allow you to focus on more important matters.

Custom Lighting

If you don't have an installation already, a custom lighting system is another fantastic trend because it helps with the ambiance and makes the pool safer for late-night swims. There are several styles to choose from, all customizable with different colors for a personalized touch.
