When spring finally rolls around, pool owners throughout the Twin Cities rejoice. But before you take your first dip, make sure you’ve taken proper care of your pool! Performing necessary spring cleaning and maintenance is a critical step in bringing your pool out of hibernation, and at Royal Pool & Spa, we’re here to help you do it.

Below, we’ve listed a few spring pool care tips you won’t want to miss, and if you need help with your swimming pool maintenance, don’t hesitate to give us a call!

Adjust the Water Level

Throughout winter, your pool water likely dipped below the optimal level. This is a normal occurrence, so don’t immediately assume you're dealing with a leak. Simply top up the pool to the correct water level with your garden hose. You may want to add a bit of extra water since you’ll inevitably lose some to evaporation, as well as during the cleaning process.

Maintain Proper pH

Algae and other bacteria thrive in warm water, which means as soon as temperatures rise beyond the mid-60s, algae blooms can take off. To prevent bacterial or fungal growths, you’ll need to adjust the water’s pH to the appropriate level — somewhere between 7.4 and 7.6.

If you’re not sure how to adjust or maintain proper pH levels in your pool water, a swimming pool maintenance specialist can take care of the job for you. Feel free to inquire about our swimming pool maintenance schedules, if you’d like ongoing professional care for your pool.

Keep Swimming Pool Supplies On Hand

If you plan on performing your own swimming pool maintenance throughout the summer, make sure you keep supplies on hand. Not sure what you need? Basic pool care products include:

●        Water test strips

●        Chlorine tablets or liquid

●        Algaecide

●        Water balancing chemicals

●        Pool cleaning accessories, including a skimmer net, pool pole, and vacuum

If you’re not entirely certain which chemicals and tools you should acquire, feel free to reach out to our team with questions. We can also deliver swimming pool chemicals directly to your home if you prefer.

Remove Debris Regularly

If you kept a cover on your pool throughout winter, there probably won’t be a substantial amount of debris in the water. However, whipping winter winds can sometimes force small twigs, leaves, and other organic material under the cover and into the pool. Before you break out the pool vacuum, use a net to collect as much debris as you can from the surface of the water and the floor of the pool.

Once you’ve removed the majority of the debris, go ahead and vacuum the bottom of the pool. We recommend performing debris removal at least once per week, but if your yard contains multiple trees, you’ll need to tackle leaf accumulation as it arises.
