Your pool filter is what ultimately keeps your pool water clean of any unwanted debris. The type of filter system in your pool will determine how often it needs to be replaced, because certain pool filters last only a specific number of years.
If you need a pool filter replacement, the type of filter needed depends on the size of the pool. No matter what, Royal Pool & Spa is ready to help you find the right solution and provide five-star service!
Types of Pool Filter Systems
Royal Pool & Spa provides filter system repair and replacement services for in-ground pools with D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth), sand, and cartridge filters. If yours has an issue, our expert technicians will help determine whether it requires repair or replacement.
D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth) Filter
D.E. filters require more maintenance than sand or cartridge filters due to their more complicated design. It is important to routinely inspect your D.E. filter fabric for any tears or holes that may have formed over time.
D.E. Filter Repair vs. Replacement
If you see large tears, it may be time to think about replacing the pool filter. If leaks are occurring through a hole or crack in the tank, you will want to have your tank or entire filter replaced immediately.
When inspecting your D.E. Filter, look for:
- Tears or rips in the filter fabric, (check the seams and bottom center)
- Broken tabs on the top, where the grid inserts into the manifold
- Cracks in the manifold
- Missing or broken air bleeder screen or sock on the manifold
- Loose assembly (missing through wing nuts on thru-bolts)
- Missing or broken standpipe o-ring
- Mis-spaced or misaligned grids
Sand inside a sand filter should be replaced every three to five years, depending on the size of the pool and the workload the filter is under. Sand filters contain sand that can sometimes become clumped, allowing water to stream through holes without being filtered. With hard water, the sand can also calcify (turn the sand into sandstone).
Sand Filter Repair vs. Replacement
If you’re needing to run your pump more often than normal to maintain water quality, the sand may need to be replaced. If your sand filter tank is cracked, usually from freeze damage it’s time to replace your sand pool filter. You may notice sand in your pool, which can come from a cracked or broken sand filter.
The sand in your sand filter will need to be changed every three to five years because the sand naturally wears down. The sharp edges of the sand, which normally allow it to properly filter water, can become smooth over time, creating channels for unfiltered water to get through. You may notice your pool water just isn’t as clean as it should be.
Our experts will follow the necessary steps to replace the sand in your sand filter and get it running like new!
A cartridge filter should be replaced every three to five years, depending on how often it is used. Pools open all year long should have their filters replaced more often than pools that are used for only a few months of the year.
Cartridge Filter Repair vs. Replacement
Cartridge filters have fewer parts than other pool filter systems, so maintenance should not occur very often. However, like all pool filters, cartridge filters can spring the occasional leak, which will need repair. Routinely check your filter for any leaks around the center (belly band) or for any unusual cracks.
